Preparing Your Child for College Success: Insights from Jennifer Blanco

As parents, one of the most common questions we’re asked is, “How can we best prepare our children for college?” Having mentored countless students transitioning into college, we’ve discerned patterns among both successful and unsuccessful students. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll share key insights to help you support your child’s journey towards college success.

Understanding the Essentials

Before delving into specific strategies, it’s essential to grasp the foundational principles of college preparation. Three primary areas stand out as crucial:

  1. Fostering Independence: Encouraging your child to embrace freedom is paramount. Many students struggle with the transition to college life, particularly those accustomed to stringent parental control. Providing them with opportunities to exercise autonomy while still at home can significantly ease this adjustment period.
  2. Developing Social Skills: Social adeptness plays a pivotal role in a student’s college experience. They’ll be surrounded by unfamiliar faces and must learn to navigate social interactions effectively. Equipping them with strong social skills beforehand can mitigate feelings of isolation and anxiety, enhancing their overall well-being.
  3. Providing Comprehensive Support: Preparing your child for the practical aspects of college life is equally important. From basic life skills like cleaning and cooking to financial management and study habits, ensuring they possess a solid foundation will facilitate a smoother transition into college.

Nurturing Independence

Empowering your child to make decisions and manage their time independently is crucial preparation for college life. Students accustomed to autonomy tend to adapt more readily to the newfound freedom of college. Conversely, those who are overly controlled may struggle to navigate their independence, impacting their academic performance, social life, and mental well- being.

Cultivating Social Skills

Social competence is essential for thriving in a college environment. Encourage your child to engage in social activities, join clubs, and foster meaningful friendships. Building strong social skills beforehand can help alleviate the challenges of fitting in and forming connections with peers, ultimately enhancing their college experience.

Providing Comprehensive Support

Equipping your child with practical life skills is indispensable preparation for college. From household chores to financial management, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to navigat everyday challenges will empower them to thrive independently. Investing time in teaching these skills during their high school years can make a significant difference in their college readiness.

Spotlight on Jennifer Blanco

Jennifer Blanco serves as an exemplary model of college preparedness and success. She joined the Valley Guardians Program in the year 2020 and was assigned a coach that would guide her through life. The coach was aimed to help her to prepare for college and to be successful in life! Prior to embarking on her college journey, Jennifer demonstrated a proactive approach to preparation. Guided by mentors and supported by her family, she honed essential skills, including time management, financial literacy, and self-care. She got a job which helped her learn hard work, how to manage finances, and improve her time management skills. She was completely in control of her grades and her parents never looked at them. She learned study skills, good habits, and HW tracking skills. She spent a lot of time working on intangibles likes mental health, exercise, healthy eating, social skills, and family relationships. She was a part of different clubs, participated in school activities, hang out with her friends, and organized parties. All of these things would prove to be an investment in her future!

Throughout her first year of college, Jennifer flourished academically, maintaining a stellar 4.0 GPA. She has joined two amazing clubs for her business major which she participates in and hopes to get leadership roles next year. She has a great group of friends that she has made and plans to room with them next year. She is able to go to her family’s house during the weekends and keeps in great contact with them. She has not gone into a single dollar of debt because of what her scholarships cover and her ability to manage her own finances. Not only has she done well with the observable things, but she has been very stable! She has been exercising and found love doing yoga with others. She goes out and has fun with friends doing college activities. She has learned how to deal with the stress of school even though she is in the Barrett’s Honor Program and classes can be difficult. In all, her first year of college has been a major success and we are excited about her future. Jennifer’s robust support network and commitment to holistic well-being have contributed to her remarkable achievements both academically and personally.

Conclusion

Preparing your child for college is a multifaceted endeavor that requires careful consideration and proactive effort. By nurturing their independence, fostering social skills, and providing comprehensive support, you can empower them to thrive in the collegiate environment. Jennifer Blanco’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of effective preparation and unwavering support. THE VALLEY GUARDIANS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The Valley Guardian program is a multiyear coaching program for underserved students in the community. It was created by successful business people in the valley. They got together and formed a non-profit to find ways to fund developmental programs for kids in underserved communities. This program was aimed toward the underserved kids in the valley who have good hearts and have a desire to be successful and be mentored. The kids who are a part of this program have access to all different kinds of services like professional coaches, coaching calls, getaways, leadership education and training workshops, access to professionals in the valley, college and career readiness and more. The Valley Guardian program started with a single school of 6 students, and overtime has grown to 13 schools, 7 districts, and 49 active students. Overall there have been 120 students who have benefited from this program.

The Valley Guardians program offers over thirty online and in person workshops per year. We do many different types of workshops per year including things like arcades, parks, hikes, parties, and online leadership training. Many of the kids who come are not very social and are looking for a place to feel comfortable and be able to meet new people while being themselves. When they come to programs they have a great time. The way we set them up makes kids feel comfortable, whether we ask them what they are interested in doing or set them up to meet new people through social activities at the beginning of each event. The students find they feel connected and accepted through the program.
